Introduction
In Morocco’s North Atlantic coast, Asilah is the most wonderful beach town. The city is very popular in the summer months with Moroccan vacationers who flock to its sandy beaches. The houses are white-washed and the city walls are covered in colorful murals, which is making this town look like at home in Greece. In every summer a popular cultural festival is held here. Other highlights include small shops, medina, the ramparts and sure the beaches.
As Tangier and Tetouan close neighbours, this bustling cities has turned out to be so easy-going as it is. There are plenty of hustlers and tourists around, but in all Asilah is a place to be relaxed. This place is worth a stop on your journey in Morocco, but you should think of visiting the city only in summer time: So far winters can be unpleasant in north Moroco, and even more so close to the sea.
With whitewashed houses, Asilah resembles many places in Greece, broken by some blue wall or door painting. Generally, in many areas the standard is higher than in Morocco. This is the place to hangout for artists, and you will spot many traces of their activity while walking around the place, like paintings on house walls. Through festivals of different kinds, Asilah is also working on getting visitors to the place. One of them is held in August every year being the best, where music and artwork are the main ingredients. Sure, summer is the time to visit Asilah.
The Graves
The most iunteresting spot in Asilah is the Koubba of Sidi Mansour with its graveyard of holy Islamic warriors, those dying while waging jihad. The “holy war” may have a certain quality of greatness. For non-Muslims the site is closed, as is common across Morocco. But everyone can be easily enjoy every attractive part visually. The long rectangular tiled areas on the ground graveyard are the individual graves. These are a rather uncommon burials form within Islam, usually from above the ground, a grave rises.
The Ramparts
Asilah’s ramparts were built in the late 15th by the Portuguese, and in early 16th century, designed by the Botacca military architect. The incredible level of preservation is partly the modern restoration result. At many points, private houses have been built right up the walls, making difficult access at points. To the ocean, there are two prongs point out, but which is open to the public only the southern one.
The babs
Into the medina of Asilah, there are two main gates, the Bab el-Homar and the Bab el-Kasaba. The Bab el-Homar is decorated by Portugal’s architect, Alfonso V, with the faded royal arms. The top picture is the el-Homar, the lower is el-Kasaba rom outside.
Palais de Raisouli
This palace was completed in 1909, made possible by heavy taxation and forced labour. It was completed within a year, so much that. The main profession of Raisoulis was kidnappings for ransoms. He is so successful that he was became governor over most Morocco northwestern, Raisouli was highly respected, considered jihad, since his victims were non-Muslims. The British writer, Walter Harris were captured those. Raisouli’s talents extended those of the ordinary thug, the Harris case proved although Harris was not well treated, the two became long lasting friends.
Grand mosque
With its low roof and centrally positioned octagonal minaret, his grand mosque has a certain charm.
Wall paintings
A number of house walls are turned into unique paintings, during the International Cultural Festival every August, staged here since 1978. Until the next festival these paintings will only survive. In addition, the festival brings musicians from across the world and other performers to little Asilah, for more lasting result. As well as in the Centre Hassan II, most of the festival is held in the Palais de Raisouli, where the Centre Hassan II is a permanent exhibition of art.
Frying vegetables

The long beach
The Asilah’s beach is located extremely convenient, beginning just a kilometre north of the medina; between the two attractions, many of the hotels are positioned right. However, it takes quite a stretch before it becomes popular and good. Here, waves are fine but undertows rarely a problem. The other beach of Asilah, 3 km south, is called Paradise Beach. By horse-drawn carriage, you can get out here.
