Kenya’s best top ten wildlife parks and reserves are listed below and reflect our personal opinion. These parks and reserves make Kenya the most popular safari destination in Africa. Than anywhere else in Africa, Safaris in Kenya are cheaper but you can also enjoy an exclusive experience.
1. The Masai Mara National Reserve
It is the most popular wildlife park in Kenya, Masai Mara National Reserve. From July – October you can witness the incredible migration of millions zebra and wildebeest. The Maasai tribesman also offer cultural tours which really add to the experience. The Mara showcases big families of buffaloes, elephants, hippos and lions among many more.
Best Time To Go: July – October
Where to Stay: There are plenty of campsites and lodges both outside and inside the reserve.
Getting There: Charter flights from Nairobi or Tanzania
2. Lake Nakuru National Park
For its huge flocks of flamingos that enjoy the alkaline waters of this shallow soda lake, Lake Nakuru is famous. Other than many more species of birds and a million flamingos, the park is also home to warthog, white rhino, giraffe, ostrich, hippo and lion. From several environmental pressures, Lake Nakuru is slowly recovering that caused its flamingo population to decline in the 1990′s.
Best Time To Go:Year-round
Where to Stay: There are several private and public campsites and two main lodges in the park.
Getting There: From Nairobi by road, estimated 3 hours drive.
3. Mount Kenya National Reserve
Africa’s second highest peak after Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, is Mount Kenya that to reach its summit, you don’t need special training. The mount is a UNESCO World Heritage site and seat of the Kikuyu God, Ngai. As well as spectacular mineral springs, lakes and forests, the Reserve is home to rare species of animals.

Best Time To Go: July – October and January – February
Where to Stay: There are lodges and private camps and also huts on the mountain in the surrounding area.
Getting There: From Nairobi by road which needs 3-4 hours drive.
With breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is a popular park. Centered around Observation Hill, the park offers great views of the plains. Other than their cattle, The Maasai live around the park and Amboseli is home to over 400 species of bird and more than 50 species of mammal. You can see hippo, elephant, leopard, cheetah and more.
Best Time To Go: June – October
Where to Stay: There are several campsites and lodges in the park.
Getting There: From Nairobi by road which needs 4 hours or can be flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport by a daily scheduled.
5. Tsavo National Parks
This park is split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The landscape is wild and the Tsavo parks are vast. Tsavo East is less developed but more accessible than Tsavo West. You can watch elephants bathe among the crocs and the hippos, in Tsavo West, from a unique vantage point of an under-water glass tank. The “Big Five” do live here, but you have to look carefully to spot them.
Best Time To Go: May to October
Where to Stay: Tsavo West has several lodges, while Tsavo East has only 1 lodge. Both parks have private campsites.
Getting There: From Mombasa by road which needs 3-4 hours or from Nairobi (need 10 hours); Or charter flight.
