luxor temple pictures

It will be hard to miss the spectacular Luxor Temple, if you travel to ancient Thebes located in the center of Luxor city. The Luxor Temple was built largely by Ramesses II and Amenhotep III around 1400BC. The main purpose was to celebrate the Opet festival. On to the temple, many rulers built yet it always remained a place of worship for later Muslims and Christians. A mosque that is one of the highlights of the site, was built inside the temple still exists.

At night, Luxor Temple is beautifully lit so it’s worth visiting the site at sunset. Visit hours are 9am – 6pm and is 20 Egyptian Pounds for admission. See more information about Luxor, Thebes and Karnak here, including how to get to the major sites and where to stay.
