Introduction

The imperial city of Marrakech located at the the Atlas mountains foot, which is noisy, large, smelly and polluted. However, Marrakech is full of history, also fascinating and beautiful with known as the cultural center of Morocco. You’ll have a lot of fun if you enjoy a daily assault on all your senses then. The most popular sights include numerous references to “peace” and “tranquility” like the gardens around the Saadian Tombs or the Majorelle gardens that you’re in for an interesting experience. Then get an official guide to take you around if you find it a little overwhelming.

In Marrakech, there are so many things to see, so you should spend at least 3 days. Just treat yourself to a stay in a Riad if you can afford it, so when you return from a hectic day amidst fire jugglers, carpet salesman and noisy souqs, you can have and relax in a nice quiet courtyard with a cup of mint tea.

Best Time to Go

Best to try and avoid the summer heat and crowds by visit Marrakech in the cooler months between September and May. But, in summer some annual events take place which you may not want to miss:

1. Marrakech Popular Arts Festival in July. The festival attracts dancers, folk singers, fortune-tellers, snake charmers, acting troupes, fire-swallowers from all over Morocco. Since 2000, it has also attracted entertainers and many artists from Asia and Europe. Take place in the ruins of the 16 century the Djemma el Fna and Badi Palace for the main events.

2. Fantasia. It is a horse-riding spectacle wearing traditional clothing that includes hundreds of charging horsemen and also women. Part of the Popular Arts Festival, it takes place at the same time in July. In the evenings outside the city walls near the Bab Jdid you can experience the Fantasia. There’s also a restaurant that offers entertainment as the Fantasia while you dine, the Chez Ali, if you don’t get to see it in July.

3. Imilchil Marriage Feast. Where up to forty couples tie the knot, it is a Berber marriage festival. It takes place near Marrakech, Imilchil in the Middle-High Atlas Mountains. It is a great way to experience Berber culture including dance and music. Every year the event takes place after harvest, so the dates vary.

In the Atlas mountains from mid-January to mid-February there is usually enough snowfall, so good to accommodate skiers. Less than 50 miles away from Marrakech, there is The Oukaimeden ski resort. There are several ski lifts and you can always take a donkey up the slopes if ski lifts don’t work. In addition, the views are always spectacular if there’s not enough snow and it’s still worth the trip.
