Merzouga, this is one of the best resource for sights, restaurants, hotels, bars, what to do and see. It is a desert town that lies a stone throw away from Morocco’s largest dunes, the impressive Erg Chebbi sand dunes. You can organize camel treks into the desert from here, and get a little Bedouin life taste. Around Merzouga, the landscape won’t disappoint because of evokes the classic images of Sahara desert. To stay to suit all budgets, there are plenty of places.
The most spectacular experience may be watching the suset or sunrise over the sand dunes of Merzouga. The Erg Chebbi is said to have some of Morocco’s highest dunes. Indeed, the desert and the dunes wildlife are impressive. From which to explore bird-watchers and the desert, Merzouga is an excellent base that will be enthralled with what they see. A lake forms attracts pink flamingos in spiring, in near Merzouga. During spring migration, other rare birds stop here. For a couple hours, a camel trip is a great way to see the dunes. There are two to three day desert tours on camel for those who are up for the ultimate adventure or are used to getting saddle-sore. Seeing the sunset over the dunes is still worth though.
It is even better to taking an overnight excursion over the dunes. As you ride your camel, you’ll see many waves of sand dunes at sunset. In the morning, as it catches the dunes, you watch the sunrise from Algeria. You know, campfire dinner cannot be better…
The Erg Chebbi dunes constitute the great curiosity area. In the form of draperies, they are real moving sculptures whose colors vary according to the light intensity. Like alive walls, they are drawn up in the doors of the desert, about 40 km of the Algeria border, the Highest reach 150 m.
This is superb sunrise and sunset. It is advised to spend the night located at the midle of the dunes, under tents (hairs of dromedary and goat) of nomads.
Getting To and From Merzouga
Going to Merzouga can through asphalt road, if you leave from Rissani you go over good road that are very well marked. It?s recommended to travel in a 4WD such like land-rover if you leave from erfoud, and take a very good map of the area and planing to do some piste. You can also by taking a taxi to get there from Rissani.
Other way, Marrakesh is your jumping off point. You can either drive and hire a car from there or by bus head off to Ouazarzate where you can carry on your journey by public transport. Now you’ve got to no way of knowing when you’ll be coming back or arriving which is a problem if you are have hotels booked or on a tight schedule, while the public transport option is feasible. Also, the tour or bus option means you don’t get to stop off along the way to see and do what you want at your own pace. So, the best advice is hire a car.
If you choose to using air flights, from casablanca to Ouarzazte there are daily flights arriving at midnight. Ouarzazate is best spend the night in and to Merzouga just travel 5 hours. This is for those who have little time Of course, because of you’ll miss views of the High Atlas Mountains that very spectacular on the way by car from Marrakech.
Great to have private transport, so after you leave Ouarzazate, you can see dades valley and Todra Grge on the way. From Errachadia, there are also weekly flights, which is 2 hours away, as on does not rent a car in Errachadia then you must arrange transport.
